Survey Interpretation

Computer Lab Management (CLM) periodically surveys faculty who teach in our computer classrooms. CLM uses this information to improve the quality of service in the computer classrooms. The survey results (especially question #2) show that overall faculty are quite happy with the computer classrooms.

However, there were some concerns raised in the comments:

  • There was a comment about some of the computers being old. The COVID pandemic caused a pause in our upgrade cycle. We will be upgrading those computer this summer and will get back to our usual upgrade cycle.
  • There were several comments about the layout in different classrooms. Currently we have several layouts and each has trade-offs which favor some pedagogical methods but make other methods less effective. CLM needs to figure out how to better match faculty with their preferred classrooms. Unfortunately, in most cases course reservations are made so far in advance the faculty are not assigned until much later. We need work with the departmental schedulers to investigate processes to better place faculty.
  • We opened new computer classrooms in the Teaching & Learning Complex (TLC) for Fall 2022. Two of these classrooms are groupwork focused layouts. So far we have gotten positive feedback about those rooms so we will attempt to develop more classrooms of that type in the future.

On 12/4/2023 Computer Lab Management sent an email to faculty who had taught in the computer rooms during Fall 2023 asking them to fill out this survey.

Question 2. Please rate the following aspects of our services:

Needs significant improvement Needs some improvement Needs little or no improvement No opinion
Classroom availability (able to reserve times needed) 0 1 5 6
Support from computer lab managers 0 0 9 3
Support from the Computer Room Consultant (CRC) 0 3 8 1
Preparedness of the classroom (room cleared out, whiteboard supplies, etc.) 0 2 10 0
Computer usability and reliability 1 1 9 1
Preventing classroom interruptions 0 1 9 2
Classroom size (too small or too large) 0 0 11 1
Temperature control (room was too hot or too cold) 1 1 9 1
Layout of the classroom 0 5 7 0
Classroom environment (cleanliness, sound, etc.) 0 2 10 0
Other - Please specify below 0 2 3 5

Classroom environment and Other reasons:

  • Some software needs to be updated. I requested updates in summer, but they still have not happened. Specifically Fetch and Visual Studio Code
  • I understand that there's really nothing you can do to improve availability since you can't control the demand!
  • The computers are extremely slow and in need of an upgrade. The teacher's monitor in Olson 241 still blanks out when I am using it--typing. Many writing classes, including mine, include a lot of groupwork. The computer classrooms are not conducive for group work.
  • Everything is excellent!
  • Room was very warm throughout the quarter. A raised instructor desk would be nice so that I can see how engaged the students are as I am working through examples. Placement of the TVs felt a little too wide. 2020 Esau
  • There is no area for presentations or critiques, a ledge, or board to pin on. 2102 SCC

Question 3. How would you rate your overall experience teaching in CLM Computer Classrooms this quarter compared with previous quarters?

Better 1
Same 6
Worse 1
N/A 3

"Better" Reasons given:

  • The TLC computer classroom was great. The Hutchinson room was less positive an experience for me. The reservation times are too close together and my class and I often had to just interrupt the class before and kinda force them to yield the space.

"Same" Reasons given:

  • The SCC labs are great to teach in
  • Same excellent service!
  • I have always gotten the help I needed right away and the rooms have always been clean.

"Worse" Reasons given:

  • The whiteboards are not always cleaned after the previous class. The computers have been getting markedly slower.

"N/A" Reasons given:

  • None

Question 4. What pedagogical issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

  • The whiteboard wall has an area that is unusable
  • Used my own laptop rather than class computer. Otherwise, none!
  • I don't understand this question. It seems that everything in the room is a pedogogical issue. If the technology is not up to par, teaching and learning are disrupted.
  • none
  • see above Comment was "There is no area for presentations or critiques, a ledge, or board to pin on."
  • The fixed rows--as in Hutchinson 93-- are so limiting. It means that even when I ask students to get in groups they end up working with their group in silence by working in the same Google doc. This can be really productive, but I wish it wasn't the ONLY way students feel like they can work together. In the TLC classrooms the difference is super apparent. The pods, multiple screens, and multiple white boards lend themselves to more interaction -- and more variety of interactions. Thumbs up for TLC pod classrooms!!!

Question 5. What technological issues, if any, have you faced while teaching in a computer classroom?

  • none
  • In Olson 241, Monitor arm not working at beginning of quarter, screen blanking out (which it still does). In both rooms computers taking forever to log in, which is often exacerbated by the previous teacher monopolizing the room until my class begins. For Olson 241, I arrive at the classroom 10 minutes before my class begins but often do not start teaching until 5 minutes after by class begins because of the combined inconsiderateness of the previous teacher and the slow login of the computer. For some reason, many of my students have a hard time opening the door to Shields 90B. I, personally, have never had a problem, If that many students (several different students over different days) have a problem, there is a likely problem with the door handle.
  • Adobe AI connection errors this last week for 5-7 students during a demo.
I need scanners operational, wacom tablets for 25 computers, and the blu-ray player still for All DES 16 classes
  • A few times, I had issues with the audio, but the aides helped right away.
  • The TLC classroom had some strange issues with monitors going blank without me taking any action. I asked the student support staff for help, they put in a ticket, and it was swiftly fixed.

Question 6. Do you have any other comments or suggestions regarding the computer classrooms.

  • Does anyone use the scanners? They take up a lot of space and these days students are more likely to take a picture with their phones. I would be inclined to leave one and remove the rest.
  • Great resource. Thanks.
  • Obviously, I cannot emphasize this enough--the computers are out of date and need upgrading.
  • Please take over Cruess 205 and 207-- those places are in shambles and the services is abysmal!
  • Great job, folks!
  • Teaching first thing in the morning in a TLC computer classroom can be a bit challenging because sometimes the rooms aren't unlocked yet and I have to go find a student worker by checking all the rooms. Is there any way that they are open by 7:30am by default?
